About a year ago I received a call that every nursing director fears - one of my nurses had collapsed. It was Sharon. She had actually collapsed over a bed-bound patient while caring for her. I ran to the emergency department, and through their own tears, her fellow nurses began working on Sharon. We were terrified. Our worst fears were realized when she returned from the CT scan, positive for a stroke" (Christine Wade, UTMB).
"I was taking care of a patient and, as it turned out, she was the one taking care of me," Bourg said, "and she was the one who called for help."
Sharon Bourg has made an almost complete recovery after her stroke. She returned to work within months and made huge lifestyle changes to better her health. Because of her personal experience with stroke, Sharon has become uniquely qualified to help stroke patients that come into the ER. She is using her knowledge and story to help care for these patients as they are on the road to recovery. "I was dumbfounded. She was actually using her own experience to help her care for these vulnerable patients in a way no one else could. It was simply incredible” (Christine Wade, UTMB).
Sharon Bourg received an award for the “Top 10 Nurses” in the Houston area in 2014. She is an amazing advocate for stroke patients and for the American Heart & Stroke Association. We are paying tribute to UTMB’s amazing staff member, survivor, and caregiver at the 2015 AHA Galveston Gala.
