The American Heart Association (AHA), Latina Leadership Circle hosts Go Red Por Tu Corazón events. The events include “Celebrando el Sabor” and “Vestido Rojo” Women’s Health Symposium to (Educate, Equip and Empower.) Latinas. The Go Red Por Tu Corazón events are hosted by a dynamic group of Latinas from the Houston community.
“Celebrando el Sabor” is a VIP Reception which hosts approximately 150 at the Houston office of the American Heart Association (AHA). The lobby, conference rooms and courtyard (weather permitting) will be the scene of this wonderful tasting event. The reception will feature cooking demonstrations and tastings by local chefs focusing on recipes from Latin America. This event will have discussions about portion control, reading labels and ingredient substitution, along with local chefs that will share practical and healthy cooking tips with attendees. The event will have a an “Open Your Heart” donation ask during the program. Participants will discover different ways of making both delicious and wholesome meals. As part of the event, networking and sharing health stories with other like-minded individuals will add fun to the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. The VIP reception will host individuals from the Greater Houston area who have a vested interest in the health and well-being in the Hispanic community as it relates to heart disease and stroke. The ideal guests are those who will not only make a financial contribution but will support AHA programs in the Hispanic community.
Vestido Rojo Women’s Health Event is designed to Educate, Equip and Empower attendees and it is hosted by the Latina Leadership Circle. During the event culturally relevant information about the prevention of Heart Disease and Stroke will be presented. This year’s event was presented in both English and Spanish and welcomed Dr. Miguel Quiñones, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Cardiology, Weill Cornell Medical College as the Education speaker and Dr. Laura G. Murillo, President and CEO of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as the Keynote speaker. Event Honorees celebrated women who were taking a stand in the community to create awareness and promote the American Heart Association. The 2015 Honorees were: Cyndy Garza-Roberts, Director of Public Affairs of HEB. Maria Rios, President & CEO of Nation Waste, Inc. and Mrs. Maria Quiñones, Advocate. The event includes health screenings, health education sessions, nutritional information, and fun physical activities facilitated by experts in the field. The attendees will enjoy a networking heart healthy lunch and a stroke survivor story. The American Heart Association (AHA) will present information on Texas advocacy initiatives and a call to action for attendees to join AHA statewide advocacy initiatives. AHA will also discuss programs such as CPR anytime and facilitate The Sodium Pledge.
